Louise Dearman by Dearmantion

Continuing in this series of blogs by theatre fans writing about their favourite performer this newest blog comes from Dearmantion who write about Louise Dearman.

When did you first discover your perfomer?
I first discovered Louise when she was announced as the new G(a)linda in Wicked back in 2010, I didn’t actually see her in the show until later in her run but it pushed me to search her up on Spotify, I listened to “You Can Always Count On Me” and instantly knew I loved her voice!

Have you seen them perform live if so in what shows?
I’ve seen Louise in quite a few shows, Wicked of course (as both Glinda and Elphaba), Water Babies most recently and a range of different concerts and gigs that she’s done. Sadly I have missed out on some great concerts that she’s done but I’m grateful to have seen her onstage as much as I have.

How would you describe them to your fellow theatre fans?
Beautiful! She’s beautiful in every sense of the word – her voice, her acting, her looks, and of course her personality. No matter how much I admire someone as a performer I just can’t quite call myself a fan unless I think they’re a nice person, and Louise is just lovely!

Favourite performance?
This is really tough, I’d have to say the penultimate time I saw her as Glinda in Wicked. She was at her very best that day and I just fan-girled the whole way through!

Favourite song you've heard them perform?
Again, it’s really difficult for me to pick but probably when she sang “Part Of Your World” at the BBC fairy tales concert. She sang it so beautifully, and with that massive orchestra it was perfection. Apparently Louise can roller skate so she’d be a perfect Ariel if they brought a production of The Little Mermaid to the West End like the Broadway one.

Have you met them?
Yes! I love going to see Lou at stage door or signings, as I said before she is just so lovely, amazing to her fans and so down to earth. She always compliments my outfits, which I love her for! I’ve got quite a few pictures with Louise but I’m not going to put them in because I always look like a mess next to her!

What show would you like to see them in?
Before I’d heard of Louise she starred in Evita and played Lucy in Jekyll and Hyde, those are two roles I would love to have seen her play. If I had to pick something I’d like her to be in that she hasn’t previously been in it’d be Les Miserables, She’d make a great Fantine, but I’d be sad that she wouldn’t be on stage for that long.

Daniel Boys by Kirstie Fuller

In a new series of blogs where you write a blog about your favourite performer. The next of these blogs comes from Kirstie who writes about her favourite performer Daniel Boys.

When did you first discover your performer?
I first became aware of Daniel Boys when he was special guest on John Barrowman's tour in 2009. I'd heard of him over the previous few months, as he'd been a contestant on the TV show 'Any Dream Will Do', which fpcused on the search for the leading man in Andrew Lloyd Webber's new West End production of 'Josephn and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat' but I hadn't been watching that.

Have you seen them perform live? If so, in what shows?
I've been lucky enough to see Daniel on many occasions. The first time was in August 2009, when he was the special guest at John Barrowman's 'An Evening With John Barrowman' concert at Arundel Castle. Since then I've seen Daniel three times in the West End production of 'Avenue Q', in his own cabaret concerts in London (Pizza On The Park, The Delfont Room, Trafalgar Studios, Leicester Square Theatre) and Maidstone, and in concerts in the Dress Circle Benefit Gala at Her Majesty's Theatre, in A Night Of 1000 Voices at the Royal Albert Hall. I've also seen him twice in Ordinary Days at Trafalgar Studios, as Prince Simon of Sofaria in 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' in Stevenage, as Peter Pan in 'Peter Pan' at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton,, in 'The Opinion Makers' at the Mercury Theatre, Colchester, and as Sir Lancelot in the West End production of 'Spamalot' at the Playhouse. I've also seen Daniel both host and perform at West End Live in 2010 and 2012.

How would you describe them to your fellow theatre fans?
Daniel is a performer I could watch for hours. Whether he's portraying a more serious character like Jason in 'Ordinary Days', playing for lughs in panto, or having to act, sing and handle a puppet in 'Avenue Q', he just lights up the stage for me. He's also an absolute sweetheart who is generous with his time at stage doors and after shows, and will always have a chat - sometimes about the most random of things! - and take a photo if he can.

Favourite performance?
How can I choose? It has to be either his role as Rod/Princeton in 'Avenue Q' or as Jason in 'Ordinary Days'. Two very different roles - one in a full scale West End musical, the other an intimate production in a theatre space with less than 100 seats and only four cast members, but which both evoke so many feelings in me. However, I also absolutely adore seeing Daniel when he's just being himself at one of his own solo cabaret shows.

Favourite song you've heard them perform?
So many of Daniel's songs are absolutely lovely, but his covers of 'Run Away With Me' and 'I Hope You Dance' are just simply beautiful, and I love them both. 'I Hope You Dance' has special meaning for me, and after chatting to Daniel about it after one of his solo shows, it just makes me smile whenever I hear his sing it.

Have you met them?
I've been lucky enough to meet Daniel on many occasions now, inclusing at stage door after all three Avenue Q visits. This was taken after the second trip. I've also met him on various other occasions, and he's been kind enough to sign several different items of memorabilia such as CDs, posters and programmes for me

What show would you like to see them in?
Almost anything! Daniel is a versatile performer and I would watch him in virtually anything I was able to get to - probably multiple times! But I would love to see him back on the West End, in a leading role - he's so talented and really deserves a good, juicy role. I missed seeing him as Angel in 'Rent' years ago, but I think he would make an utterly amazing Mark, if the show ever got a revival, which it really should do!

Maria Coyne by Mark Johnson

I've decided to do my own response to this, it's taken me ages to chose who to do the blog on, but I've decided to feature my theatre fave as Maria Coyne.

When did you first discover your performer?
In the Rocky Horror Show tour of 2012/13, I found and followed all the cast on twitter when they were announced, saw the first first in Brighton on 30th December '12 and then met Maria first time in September and then a few times after that in Leicester and Wolverhampton.

Have you seen them perform live if so in what shows?
I have seen her perform, sadly only in Rocky Horror thus far but look forward in the future to seeing her perform a lot in the future.

How would you describe them to your fellow theatre fans?
An incredible lady, who is genuine and inspiring. She's a joy to follow and support, she's simply a good person, she is kind and great fun. She has a huge voice and so much talent. I think she's going to be a big star and gain a big following, she certainly deserves it.

Favourite performance?
Well I've watched her video as Magenta and she was wonderful, sadly never got to see her do it live, so I guess my fave performance for now is her as a Phantom as it's the only one I've seen her do live.

Favourite song you've heard them perform?
Probably the above video or Maria singing 'Science Fiction Double Feature' from Rocky Horror.

Have you met them?
I have, as mentioned earlier, first met her in Nottingham after Rocky then again in Leicester a couple of times that week and then on the last two nights of the tour in Wolverhampton. She's always been lovely, especially Wolverhampton when she was rushing around putting things in her car. She didn't have to make time for people yet she did.

I'm not even really sure what was going on here...
What show would you like to see them in?
She HAS to be in the stage adaptation of Frozen when that comes along. I'd love to see her play Arwen in the stage version of Lord Of The Rings. Mary Poppins, Truly Scrumptious (Chitty) and Sherrie in Rock Of Ages. To be honest I'd just love to see her leading a show, a person with that much talent should and will be a strong leading lady.

Dylan Turner by Eleanor Page

In a new series of blogs where you write a blog about your favourite performer. The next of these blogs comes from Eleanor who writes about her favourite performer Dylan Turner.

When did you first discover your performer?
October ‘11

Have you seen them perform live if so in what shows?
Yes I have.
I have seen Dylan perform in: Rock of Ages, Chariots of Fire, Tailor Made Man, Twelfth Night and performing with Westcoast.

How would you describe them to your fellow theatre fans?
It’s very hard to do justice to who Dylan is as a person but I would describe him as, a very down to earth person, who is always thankful, extremely talented, and a joy to see/ talk to.

Favourite performance?
I’d have to say my favourite performance is Joey Primo in Rock of Ages, as he was my favourite character in the show and will always have a special place in my heart, being the first character I saw Dylan perform as.

Favourite song you've heard them perform?
Without a doubt my favourite song would have to be Play That Game from A Tailor Made Man. It was such a beautiful song and Dylan performed it with such passion and strength.

Have you met them?
I’ve been lucky enough to meet Dylan many times at all of his shows, I love going to support him and speaking to him after for a catch up.

What show would you like to see them in?
In terms of a musical I would love to see Dylan perform as Bob Gaudio in Jersey Boys.
I would especially love to see Dylan perform in another work of Shakespeare would be amazing as he is such a great classic actor.

As I've said, other than these questions feel free to just freestyle write about your performer.
Dylan is simply a remarkably talented man, who is incredibly generous with his time, and so lovely to his fans. I have so many amazing memories linked to him, in just a few years of knowing him. He always gives 100% in his performance, even during times that he is not feeling his best. I’m very thankful to have been introduced to him and to have seen him in some amazing pieces of theatre.

I cannot recommend seeing him enough, and please go on Twitter and follow him at @dylanturner_

Layla Harrison by Daneyka Southwell.

In a new series of blogs where you write a blog about your favourite performer. The next of these blogs comes from Daneyka who writes about her favourite performer Layla Harrison.

When did you first discover your perfomer?
Just through her happening to be on as Meg when I saw Phantom of the Opera, and her blowing me away in the role.

Have you seen them perform live if so in what shows?
Yes, only ever in Phantom but every one of the eight times I have been she has either been a ballet girl or on as Meg.

How would you describe them to your fellow theatre fans?
The kindest, sweetest, most lovely person you will ever meet. She's so genuine and always has time for people, plus she is stupidly talented and the perfect Meg. I always think Meg is one of those parts it's easy to not pay a great deal of attention to, but every little detail Layla brings to that character means you do - she is the reason Meg is one of my favourite characters in the show. If you ever get the chance to see her Megging - DO IT.

Favourite performance?
Have to say Meg as that's the only role I've seen her play, although I do love when she's on as a ballet girl too - she is incredible.

Favourite song you've heard them perform?
Hmm...the thing about Meg is she doesn't have a "big song" so to speak, but Layla sings all of her parts so beautifully - Angel of Music is one of my absolute highlights of the show when she is on as Meg.

Have you met them?
Yes! She has been unbelievably kind to me and I will be forever grateful to her for that. When she does things like come out of stage door especially to see you, it's a special thing and I hope she knows how much that means.

What show would you like to see them in?
I don't know - possibly something more upbeat just because it'd be the complete opposite to Phantom and I think she'd be amazing in something like that. I'd also love to see her in Les Mis too.

Helen Owen by Beth Flint

In a new series of blogs where you write a blog about your favourite performer. The next of these blogs comes from Beth who writes about her favourite performer Helen Owen.

When did you first discover your performer?
Through twitter. I followed Helen for a while before I knew that she understudied Eponine and after looking through programmes from the last couple of times I'd seen Les Miserables, then realised that I had actually seen Helen in her ensemble track 3 times. After seeing tweets about how amazing she was in the role and a hearing couple of YouTube/tumblr audios, decided I really wanted to see Helen as Eponine for a while and then in June 2012 happened to be in London when she had scheduled dates.

Have you seen them perform live if so in what shows?
Only in Les Miserables. Helen has been in the show since 2008 and after only properly 'discovering' her in 2012, I still to this day can't believe how I hadn't heard about her and her Eponine before! Since then, I've seen her play Eponine 6 times and since the first time I saw the show have seen her in her ensemble track 14 times.

How would you describe them to your fellow theatre fans?
One of the most down-to-earth, lovely people you will ever meet with a killer voice to match and a portrayal of Eponine that will leave you a sobbing mess in the middle of Queen's auditorium and thereon after (especially if you sit front row front row)...

Favourite performance?
The first time I ever saw Helen as Eponine will always be stand-out for me; myself & my theatre-going friend Abbie brought a £10 standing ticket literally 15 minutes before the show started. I just remember getting to the interval of the show and my jaw was on the floor. It was the first time I'd ever had Eponine's understudy and my god I am ever grateful that 1. we decided to go to London and 2. that Helen had dates that week. There was also the first time we decided to purchase front row stalls tickets to see Helen as Eponine which is a whole other story in itself..!

Favourite song you've heard them perform?
Obviously I can only comment from seeing her in Les Mis but Helen's 'On My Own' is truly the most heart wrenching performance of the song I've seen. She captures every element of Eponine perfectly and it shows, not just in 'On My Own' but from the moment she walks to the front of the stage during the Paris scenes. 'A Little Fall of Rain' is probably one of the most stand-out 'sad' parts of the show and I don't know what it is about the way she sings this song but my tear ducts can't help but burst! Helen throws absolutely everything into being Eponine and I'm sure if you've seen her in the role you'll back me up! After seeing the show quite a few times, there's certain things you notice without even realising you've noticed until afterwards and this is how I realised that there's lots of small detail Helen adds to the role which makes her portrayal that bit more incredible. Even when Helen isn't on for Eponine and in her normal track as Clive the urchin/sick whore/various other Miserables characters, she puts everything into it and it just makes her so hard not to watch!

Have you met them? (include any pictures you'd like)
Yup! She's probably one of the funniest people I've ever spoken to at a stage door and is so genuine. It's also quite funny bumping into her catching the train home! Abbie & myself speak to Helen probably every time we see the show and I honestly do not know what on earth it's going to be like when she finishes in June.

What show would you like to see them in?
To be honest, I'd be happy to Helen in anything! I'd have loved to have seen her when she was in Mamma Mia! so maybe something like that?! Or if she'd like to come back as Fantine one day, that would be fab!

Andy Coxon by Amy Crighton

In a new series of blogs where you write a blog about your favourite performer. The next of these blogs comes from Amy who writes about her favourite performer Andy Coxon.

When did you first discover your perfomer?
I first discovered him when my friend saw him in Les Miserables in London, she then took me to see the film and sat there pointing him out the whole way through. She suggested we go and see it on west end and I thought he was brilliant!

Have you seen them perform live if so in what shows?
I’ve seen him in Les Miserables, Another Way, the Interval So Far concert and most recently 20th Century Boy. He was amazing in every role he’s played, but I think Oliver from Another Way is my favourite so far!

How would you describe them to your fellow theatre fans?
Well where do I start? He has one of the most incredible voices I’ve ever heard! He can play literally any role flawlessly! He’s just perfect, I don’t understand why the whole world doesn’t love him already!
(He is also one of the nicest people I’ve ever met)

Favourite performance?
I really liked his performance in Another Way, and I thought the songs were really different from the usual musical theatre type songs you normally hear. He also did a few songs as Angel from RENT in the Interval So Far concert, and let me tell you, his I’ll Cover You was the best one I’ve ever heard.

Favourite song you've heard them perform?
I’ll Cover You! I can’t actually remember the name of the song he sung in Another Way, but I remember I really liked it… so that song too! There’s also an audio on YouTube of him singing If I Didn’t Believe In You from The Last Five years that I really liked, and when I say really liked I mean I listened to it on repeat for a week. If you don’t believe me look at my YouTube history!

Have you met them?
Yep! He is soooooo lovely! When I went to see 20th Century Boy, I went with the girl who runs his fanpage, Holly, and went she met him she looked like she was about to cry, it was adorable.

What show would you like to see them in?
I would really really love to see him play Jamie in The Last Five Years, I think he would suit that role perfectly! I think he’d be a great Galileo in We Will Rock You. I’d be happy to see him in anything though, to be honest.

Jamie Muscato by Sophie Jackson

In a new series of blogs where you write a blog about your favourite performer. The next of these blogs comes from Sophie who writes about her favourite performer Jamie Muscato.

It will come as no surprise to any of my theatre friends that my favourite performer is the wonderful Jamie Muscato.

When did you first discover your performer?
As soon as it was announced that Spring Awakening would be premiering in London at the Lyric Hammersmith, I booked tickets for the very first show. When the cast was announced in late 2008, Jamie caught my eye so I did a bit of internet searching, found a couple of videos on YouTube and absolutely fell in love with his voice months
before I saw him on stage for the first time.

Have you seen them perform live if so in what shows?
So far I’ve seen him in Spring Awakening, Love Story, Les Misérables, Rock of Ages (25 times as Drew and 3 times as Franz), The Light Princess and I was lucky enough to be able to attend the reading of But I’m A Cheerleader the Musical, which he was a part of. I’ve also seen him perform in various concerts and as part of his hosting duties with After Show.

How would you describe them to your fellow theatre fans?
Jamie’s just brilliant - one of the most talented performers I know yet so humble with it and his vocal range is so incredible that I’m pretty sure he could sing anything. Also, he’s basically just a young Hugh Grant, so what more could you want?

Favourite performance?
At the start of this year I was privileged to be able to see his only full show in his cover role, Prince Digby, in The Light Princess. I had very high expectations and he completely smashed them, and it is still my favourite theatre moment of 2014 thus far, having happened on only the second day of the year! His last performance as Drew Boley in Rock of Ages is another special one for me - he’d gone from strength to strength understudying the role for over a year and he just gave that last show absolutely everything. I need to mention the fact that he got to perform at the 85th Academy Awards as part of the Les Misérables chorus as that was such a highlight. I stayed up all night watching a live stream on my laptop and I'm not entirely ashamed to admit that I burst into tears the second I saw him step out on to the stage - I was very overwhelmed with pride at that moment in time.

Favourite song you've heard them perform?
Oh, there are too many! ‘Take Me Away’ with Cordelia Farnworth at Scott Alan’s Hippodrome concert in November 2012 was incredible, and as one of few times I've seen him play guitar it was really lovely. ‘Never There Before’ from the workshop of ‘X’ that he did back in 2009 is a fantastic song brilliantly sung. ‘I’m Gonna Take You Home’ from But I’m A Cheerleader the Musical was hysterical and had me crying with laughter.

Have you met them?
Far, far too many times. He’s always been very generous with his time. There have been times when he must have been sick of the sight of me (I know I would have been if I were in his shoes), but he’s always lovely and has always had time for a quick chat.
The first picture is from the first time I met him, on Spring Awakening’s final day at the Novello Theatre on 30th May 2009. The second was taken in July 2012 on one of the many days I saw him as Drew in Rock of Ages (and is one of the few photos I have with him where I don't think I look completely awful).

What show would you like to see them in?
For 6 years (ever since I first saw this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajsmAVy59oc) I’ve been wanting to see him as Fiyero in Wicked. I’d also love to see him take on Guy in Once. If we do ever get a production of Next to Normal over here, I think he’d be an incredible Henry. I definitely don't have a physical list of my dream roles for him...

I’ve had the best time so far following Jamie’s career for the past 5 years and I am so excited to see what comes next for him. He’s already a star in my eyes, but his talent deserves to be recognised by so many more people.

Hadley Fraser by Kerrie Nicholson

In a new series of blogs where you write a blog about your favourite performer. The next of these blogs comes from Kerrie who writes about her favourite performer Hadley Fraser.

When did you first discover your performer?

It’s actually thanks to another performer, Ramin Karimloo that I discovered Hadley. Ramin was on TV singing Music of the Night. I remember thinking ‘I like this guy’ so off I went to youtube, and I discovered Sheytoons, the band he and Hadley share. The rest, as they say, is history!

Have you seen them perform live if so in what shows?

Hadley is actually the only performer I’ve seen enough times to hit double figures, to date I have seen him: 5 times as Javert in Les Mis, as Sid Sorokin in the Pajama Game in Chichester, as Garry Kasparov in The Machine, 2 concerts of his own at the St James Theatre plus their ‘Fairytale of New York’ concert, and as Tullus Aufidius in Coriolanus opposite another hero of mine, Tom Hiddleston. Does that give you a sense of how AWESOME I think he is? ;)

How would you describe them to your fellow theatre fans?

Insanely talented and just quite simply a pretty awesome human being. Being a fan of his has brought into my life those who I’m proud to call my closest friends, and for that I’ll always be grateful to him.

Favourite performance?

I think Hadley is an incredibly versatile performer; he can turn his hand to anything and I’m sure to love it. If I had to single one out, I’d go with Aufidius in Coriolanus. I love Shakespeare, this play in particular and it was just amazing to see him perform something so different- he bought to it real tenacity and between him, Tom and Mark Gatiss, I was glued to the action and almost didn’t breathe for the entirety of the play. I was a very proud Hadley fan that afternoon!

Favourite song you've heard them perform?

Musical wise, it has to be ‘Hey There’ from The Pajama Game. I got to sit front row watching him sing this, and I was completely and utterly transfixed- I’ve never had goosebumps quite like it before.
‘Again’ with composing genius Scott Alan also onstage accompanying on piano was pretty immense, as was Hadley’s rendition of ‘Hard Times’, a Ray Charles song at his most recent two concerts.

Have you met them?

Oh yes – Many a time! He’s a joy, and I love him to bits. I love seeing his smile when he sees me; he’s always been so kind & thoughtful to me, as he is with all his fans. His hugs are among the best I’ve ever had at a stage door!

What show would you like to see them in?

I’d love to see him as Billy in Carousel, Adam in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, or as Bill Hickok in Calamity Jane. These musicals have some of my favourite songs for the leading man, and I think Hadley would MORE than do them justice!

Nathan Amzi by Alison Willman.

In a new series of blogs where you write a blog about your favourite performer. The first of these blogs comes from Alison on her favourite performer Nathan Amzi (me myself being a big Nathan Amzi fan, back from Rocky Horror to now, he's a supremely talented and all round good man).

When did you first discover your performer?

I first discovered Nathan in Rock of Ages in November 2011. He was playing the part of Lonny and he was incredible – he was the reason I saw the show so many times.

Have you seen them perform live if so in what shows?

I’ve been lucky enough to see Nathan perform in Rock of Ages over 30 times and I’ve also seen him sing at After Show and one of Scott Alan’s concerts both at the Hippodrome Casino.

How would you describe them to your fellow theatre fans?

He’s just amazing. He is such a confident, talented and versatile performer but he’s also really kind and generous with his time and always has time for his fans.

Favourite performance?

It’s either when I was lucky enough to see him as Lonny one last time in Manchester, because you could tell he was having so much fun, or when he sang at the Rock of Ages vs Rock of Ages After Show in November. I think the After Show might just edge it because it was just him on the stage as himself and, although I could tell he was nervous, he was incredible. He sang “One for My Baby” by Sinatra but changed it to “One for Rock of Ages” which had me in tears as it wasn’t long after it had been announced that the show was closing. It was so different to the rock songs he usually sings and it was just beautiful.

Favourite song you've heard them perform?

It has to be “Just like Paradise / Nothing but a Good Time” which is the opening medley in Rock of Ages. Whether he was Lonny or Ensemble he stole the stage and it was such an energetic song I always loved to watch it.

Have you met them?

I’ve met him lots of times; in fact he’s probably sick of me by now!

What show would you like to see them in?

I think he’d make a really good Wizard of Oz in Wicked and I’d love to see him in the new School of Rock musical if it ever makes it to the stage. I’d also love to see him back in Rocky Horror as Eddie because I am gutted that I missed it!
